Physical Activity Australia provides national registration for exercise professionals
Registration with us indicates to employers, other professionals and the public that you have achieved and maintained an appropriate standard of competency for exercise instruction.
The minimum age for registration is 18 years. Registration must be renewed every two years through participation in approved professional development activities. Greater employment options, low cost insurance and support and advice from specialists in the industry are some of the associated benefits of registration with Physical Activity Australia.

Cost of registration
Price: $169 for 2 years
Registration categories
Registration is valid for two years and is available in three categories and various subcategories. The subcategories are aligned with current occupations in the fitness industry and include specialisations offered within the National Fitness Industry Training Package superseded by the Sport, Fitness and Recreation Training Package.
Exercise Instructor (Certificate III in Fitness):
- Gym Instructor
- Group Exercise Instructor (freestyle aerobics)
- Aqua Instructor
- Older Adults Instructor
- Children’s Instructor
Exercise Trainer (Certificate IV in Fitness):
- Personal Trainer
- Older Adults Trainer
- Children’s Trainer
- Aqua Trainer
Diploma of Fitness:
- Specialised Exercise Trainer
Registration requirements
Pathways to Registration
National Fitness Industry Training Package – Certificate qualifications
- To be registered as an Exercise Instructor, you must complete the minimum level of Certificate III in Fitness.
- To be registered as an Exercise Trainer, you must complete the minimum level qualification plus Certificate IV in Fitness.
- To be registered as a Specialised Exercise Trainer, you must complete Certificates III & IV in Fitness and the Diploma of Fitness.
Higher Education
- Bachelor of Applied Science graduates who have degree qualifications in Exercise Science, Human Movement or equivalent, are eligible to apply for registration as an Exercise Instructor and/or Exercise Trainer. You must provide an academic transcript and have fulfilled the relevant subject requirements as per the mapping provided by the University.
Equivalent Overseas Qualifications
Qualifications similar to the Australian national standards can be submitted for review.
Other requirements
- A current Level 2 First Aid qualification or equivalent.
- A current CPR qualification.
- A First Aid Certificate is not required if you hold workplace first aid qualifications as part of your job i.e. Police Officer, Nurse, etc (proof is required).

Lapsed registration
If you have previously been registered with a registration body and have a lapsed registration, you can return to practice by simply completing and submitting online:
- Renew Registration Form
- Current Australian Level 2 First Aid and CPR certificates
- Evidence of 6 Professional Development Points (PDPs)
Qualified but never registered
- New Registration Form
- Copies of your qualifications and Statement of Results
- Current Level 2 First Aid and CPR certificates
- Evidence of 6 Professional Development Points (PDPs)
