Sports and Recreation as an Industry


The sports and recreation industry plays a vital role in the wellbeing of all Australians. As well as our physical health, the industry promotes the mental health of individuals and the wellness of our communities by building social cohesion and inclusion. Highly skilled coaches and instructors help Australians engage in a wide range of recreation and amusement activities. This is a rewarding industry to be involved in.

Based on Australian Bureau of Statistics and Australian Government Department of Industry, between 2015 and 2016 the Sports and Recreation industry contributed:

  • $5.4 Billion Added Gross Value to Australian economy
  • 134,000 people employed in teh Sport and Recreation industry
  • 11,118 Businesses trading in the sector

More specific Fitness statistic shows:

  • 92% of Certificate III in Fitness either employed or doing further study
  • 90.9% of Certificate IV in Fitness either employed or doing further study
  • 80.8% of Diploma in Fitness either employed or doing further study

Furthermore, based on this statistic, the number of active Registered Training Organisation (RTOs) includes:

  • Around 92 RTOs provide Certificate III in Fitness
  • Around 75 RTOs provide Certificate IV in Fitness
  • Around 15 RTOs provide Diploma in Fitness
