STARTING YOUR FITNESS CAREER

The fitness industry in Australia is booming. There is a wealth of opportunities for qualified fitness professionals to develop exciting careers. If you are about to embark on your initial qualification, there are a number of study options and qualifications to choose from.

EXERCISE INSTRUCTOR (CERTIFICATE III FITNESS)

A Certificate III qualification is a good starting point in the fitness industry. An exercise instructor can plan and run group exercise sessions to music, water based group exercise classes and basic exercise programs in a gym.

EXERCISE TRAINER (CERTIFICATE IV FITNESS)

Exercise trainers can work one-on-one with clients or groups. They are able to assess, train and supervise people in a variety of setting including gyms health and fitness clubs and community recreation organisations. They are qualified to provide rehabilitation exercise – after referral from, and under the supervision of, a medical or qualified allied health professional.

Exercise trainers may provide musculoskeletal rehabilitation exercise after referral from and under the supervision of a medical or suitably qualified allied health professional.

An exercise trainer can specialise as a personal trainer, older adults trainer, children’s trainer and an aqua trainer.

SPECIALISED TRAINER (DIPLOMA OF FITNESS)

Specialised trainers can work with elite athletes and people with chronic injuries and disease. They can deliver high-level fitness training, sports conditioning and other fitness-related activities.

They can work closely with allied health professionals and in a variety of settings, including hospitals and private homes.

Specialised trainers are also qualified to manage staff.
